Crocs have a reputation for being ugly and garish. However, the brand’s long list of designer and celebrity collaborations begs the question – is Crocs trying to change the narrative? Are they actually trendy now?
Founded in 2002, Crocs has been on the scene for over 20 years. The unmistakable shape was inspired by Dutch clogs and croslite, a material which hybrids rubber and plastic, making them practical and durable. This doesn’t sound like a recipe for the hottest must-have shoes, but this year Crocs reported a 33.9% increase in revenue since 2022.
“Crocs have always been a controversial choice of footwear.”
Crocs have always been a controversial choice of footwear. You either love them and wear them all the time, or you hate them and think they shouldn’t be seen in public. Hate websites such as ihatecrocs.com started as early as 2007, calling them “strange, ugly shoes.” A lot of the press about Crocs has been negative, so the shoe company has continually made efforts to change this.
The History of the Croc
All the way back in 2016, Crocs collaborated with Christopher Kane for their Spring/Summer 2017 collection. The year after, Balenciaga released Crocs with towering platforms.
While many condemned them for being ugly and impractical, it solidified Crocs’ name alongside high fashion brands. Since then, Crocs regularly collaborates with designers such as Salehe Bembury, and celebrities like SZA, Justin Bieber and Post Malone.
“You might even be able to evade a ‘Wait, are those Crocs?’ comment if you wear them in public.”
Emulating popular shoe styles in Croc form is one way the brand is trying to become more fashionable. The Mega Crush Sandal is reminiscent of sandals from popular brands like Teva and Doc Martens. The switch from neon pinks and yellows to neutrals like ‘bone’ and ‘elephant’ seems to be another way Crocs is trying to appeal to the more fashion-forward consumer. The shape doesn’t scream ‘Crocs’, making it rather inoffensive and even stylish. You might even be able to evade a “Wait, are those Crocs?” comment if you wear them in public.
The Echo collection is a little more out there. According to the Crocs website, they’re “anything but conformist, with bold sculpting and sport inspiration that keeps streetwear at its core.” This style is edgier and even more uniquely shaped than a regular Croc, and the earthy colour options give it a more modern feel.
Crocs do seem to know their customers, and if you’re on the Crocs website you probably already like quirky-looking shoes.
Crocs’ Recent Release
Most recently, Crocs released their Siren Clog, a take on a heeled loafer. They’re reminiscent of the mega-platformed Balenciaga Crocs, especially in the ‘hyper pink’ colour.
The product description describes the shoe as “ready for a night out” and “comfort that keeps you on your feet.” Stumbling around after a night out in a pair of heeled Crocs sounds like a quick way to sprain your ankle, and perhaps others agree as there are still no reviews for the shoes on the website. However, they could be a way to camp up your outfit for a night out, and they’re definitely a conversation piece.
“Branching out from just clogs has kept Crocs from fading into a nostalgic memory from childhood.”
Crocs could be a brand to watch for more unique and interesting shoes, especially for the upcoming summer season. Branching out from just clogs has kept Crocs from fading into a nostalgic childhood memory. And while some styles are still very eccentric, Crocs are now making products that are both wearable and tasteful.
