Album Review: ‘Midnights: Til Dawn’ by Taylor Swift

The Sky at Midnight

Katherine Witts

After the immense success of ‘Midnights’, Taylor Swift surprised fans with a new edition of the album.

‘Midnights: Til Dawn’ includes the standard tracks of ‘Midnights’ but we get three significant additions to the already sensational album.

‘Hits Different’

A personal favourite of mine, ‘Hits Different’ combines Swift’s genius and often comedic lyricism with an upbeat rhythm. Originally only appearing on a Target exclusive copy of ‘Midnights’, fans had been leaking the catchy track across streaming platforms for many months.

But to everyone’s delight, we now can confidently scream the bridge while maintaining that Swift receives her well-deserved share of the single.

“Freedom felt like summer then on the coast,Now the sun burns my heart and the sand hurts my feelings.”

Guest Appearances

‘Til Dawn’ also treats us to some special appearances from fellow artists such as, Ice Spice and Lana Del Rey.

Swift’s original version of ‘Snow on the Beach’ was an anticipated release due to fans seeing Lana Del Rey being featured on the track. However, many fans became disappointed when the artist’s whistful vocals were hardly recognisable.

Fans took to Reddit to share their disappointment, stating how the track was a  “waste of a feature”. To their surprise, the release of ‘Til Dawn’ has provided us with an updated version of the song where Rey’s whimsical vocals shine through in an additional bridge:

“This scene feels like what I once saw on a screen,I searched aurora borealis green,I’ve never seen someone lit from within.”

In comparison to the trance-like track, ‘Karma’ is almost a carefree, pop track. With Ice Spice’s appearance in the updated track, Swift provided us with a magical music video filled with fun elements. Although this is one of Swift’s less serious tracks, ‘Karma’s’ chorus will be stuck in your head for days. After all, ‘Karma’ is an earworm.

‘You’re Losing Me’

Known for releasing many editions of her albums, Swift took to Twitter to announce an exclusive copy of ‘Til Dawn’. Unfortunately, this edition was only available to the East Rutherford show attendees. This meant, only a handful of fans would be able to listen to her new track ‘You’re Losing Me’.

“I wouldn’t marry me either,A pathological people pleaser,Who only wanted you to see her.”

However, in true Swiftie fashion, fans quickly uploaded the track to streaming platforms for all to enjoy. ‘You’re Losing Me’ will forever make me cry with its brutal honesty. I personally adore this track, from its gut-wrenching lyricism to its powerful bridge.
