‘Prisoner’ is the new single by Miley Cyrus and Dua Lipa which perfectly explores the feeling of being trapped in a toxic relationship.

“The music video is also incredible, with the overarching message being one of self-empowerment and self-love.”

The repeated lines in the chorus, “Why can’t you, why can’t you just let me go?”, provide a haunting glimpse into the reality of feeling that you cannot escape an abusive and manipulative ex-partner. The catchy and captivating lyrics get stuck in your head after listening to the song once, which reflects this underlying theme of the infuriating inescapability of exes. Likening an ex-partner to an addiction, Cyrus and Lipa have created a song to which everyone can relate.

In an interview with Zane Lowe, Cyrus illustrates that the song is being released at an ideal time because everyone can identify with the feeling of being trapped in the coronavirus pandemic: ‘we’re just trapped in our emotions right now… there’s no escaping it… Anything that you’ve tried to suppress or compartmentalize… It’s yours to own, to own it or release it’. No matter how you have fared in your romantic life, this song is easily accessible to everyone.

The music video is also incredible, with the overarching message being one of self-empowerment and self-love. A message that everyone needs right now. ‘Prisoner’ is an incredible collaboration and one which will have people dancing and singing whenever it is played.

Miley Cyrus’ ‘Prisoner’, featuring Dua Lipa, is out now via RCA Records, a division of Sony Music Entertainment.
