If you’re looking for a Saturday night feel-good rom-com then The Broken Hearts Gallery is the perfect choice.

Gallery assistant Lucy (Geraldine Viswanathan) has kept one memento from every relationship she’s ever had – from an AirPod case to a tie, she has it all. But after getting dumped and fired, she drunkenly gets in a car she thinks is her Uber, leading to her to meet hotel owner Nick (Dacre Montgomery).

The two later bump into each other when Nick stops Lucy from embarrassing herself in front of an ex, which then sees them go to the hotel which Nick is building. The pair chat about relationships and heartbreak, forcing Lucy to confess her secret of keeping items from relationships. After Nick calls her an “emotional hoarder”, Lucy is convinced she needs to use her mementoes for something positive, giving her the idea of creating the heartbreak gallery, a place for people to leave items from past relationships and share their stories with the world.

“It’s refreshing to find a movie with likeable and relatable characters”

The movie is written and directed by newcomer Natalie Krinsky, who successfully creates a modern millennial twist on the typical rom-com story. With so many rom-coms written by men and their ideas of what a woman in love would be like, it’s refreshing to find a movie with likeable and relatable characters. From Lucy’s two best friends to her boss, all of the characters have strong personalities that work together and never feel overbearing. Plus, with a diverse cast that doesn’t feel forced, it’s exhilarating to see a movie that actually relates to the real world.

The two main characters, Lucy and Nick, are played brilliantly by Viswanathan and Montgomery. The pair perfectly bounce off each other’s personalities, with Lucy being chirpy and positive whilst Nick is more grounded. Although you might think Lucy’s happy and positive outlook might be annoying, it’s the opposite – the character is the heart of the movie and the more you watch the more you’ll love her.

The Broken Hearts Gallery is the perfect reminder of what a good rom-com should be, with a story that shows no major cracks and likeable relatable characters that you just want to see succeed whilst helping to remind us how impactful objects can be to a person.
