Two white signs with the words Golden Globe Awards on them.

The Golden Globes 2025 featured a killer roast, worthy winners and a diamond ring.  Award season is here, and it is time to celebrate the very best in film and TV.

Equipped with luxurious outfits and rehearsed thank you speeches, stars gathered on 6th January for the 82nd Golden Globes.

There were so many memorable moments at the Beverly Hilton this year, but here are some of the best.

Nikki Glaser effortlessly roasts the Golden Globes room

Hosting an awards show is not an easy job. If you are more mean than you are funny, you might get limited laughter like host Jo Koy last year. You might even get slapped in the face like Chris Rock at the Oscars in 2022. However, as the first stand-alone female host of the Globes, comedian Nikki Glaser managed to strike the right balance.

Having cemented her talent as a roast comic through appearances at TV roasts of Tom Brady, Rob Lowe and more, Glaser knew how to be endearingly offensive. By opening with a general joke that Hollywood can do anything except “tell the country who to vote for”, she successfully warmed the room before picking out individuals to focus on, including Timothée Chalamet, Martin Short and Nicole Kidman.

A particular highlight is when Glaser attempted to mash up musical Wicked (2024) and religious mystery Conclave (2024) in a song titled ‘Pope-ular’ only to interrupt herself because, in her words, “this sucks”. Unafraid to laugh at anyone, including herself, Glaser laughs with everyone in the room.

Demi Moore finally secures a Golden Globes win

Demi Moore won Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for The Substance (2024). She admitted: “This is the first time that I’ve ever won anything as an actor.”

Despite having a career that spans over 45 years and an iconic filmography including St Elmo’s Fire (1985), Ghost (1990) and The Scarlet Letter (1995), this Golden Globe was Moore’s first-ever win. In an earnest speech, Moore recalled being called a “popcorn actress” by a producer, someone who may be successful commercially but not critically. Moore boldly proves this producer was wrong.

Shōgun wins big

With 18 Emmy wins back in September, TV drama Shōgun’s Golden Globe success was perhaps somewhat predictable. However, by winning four Golden Globes for Best TV Drama, Best TV Actor in a Drama (Hiroyuki Sanada), Best TV Actress in a Drama (Anna Sawai) and Best TV Supporting Actor (Tadanobu Asano), Shōgun (2024) took home the most awards any TV show took home that evening.

“Shōgun’s big wins are a testament to the careful craft”

Shōgun, set in 1600s Japan, is told in a mixture of Japanese and English. However, foreign language films and TV shows are only gradually gaining recognition at Western award ceremonies outside of foreign language categories. Parasite (2019) is the only ever non-English language film to win Best Picture at the Oscars, while Netflix’s biggest-ever show, Squid Game (2021), won only one Golden Globe in 2022.

Shōgun’s big wins are a testament to the careful craft that has gone into this Disney+ series. When Tadanobu Asano won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, he humbly told the audience “maybe you don’t know me”. People certainly know him now.

Wicked gains (some) recognition

At this year’s ceremony, musical blockbuster Wicked (2024) fell victim to the Barbie (2023) curse. Despite being the third highest-grossing movie of 2024, Wicked only took home one Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

However, the Wicked cast and crew’s presence was well felt in the room. Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum humorously attempted to use internet slang as they presented the award for Best Song. Cesily Collette Taylor made an adorable red carpet appearance. While director Jon M. Chu gave an emotional speech thanking the “hundreds of people” who worked on the movie in a “radical act of optimism”.

The looks did not disappoint

The first news story after any awards show is always a best-dressed list, and the Golden Globes certainly did not disappoint. Talk of the night circulated about a ring on Zendaya’s left hand, which suggests she is engaged. Cue collective aws and ahhs!

Other highlights were Margaret Qualley’s Hepburn-esque Chanel dress, Emma Stone’s debut pixie cut, and Cynthia Erivo’s beautifully unusual black and white dress.

Many more iconic looks, moments and memes are yet to happen.”

Even the tuxedos were interesting. Ayo Edibiri adorned a gold feather tie on brand for the Golden Globes. Colman Domingo tastefully mixed and matched prints. Timothée Chalamet even turned a typical blue tie into a scarf.

Another Golden Globes over

Although they’ve been and gone, the Golden Globes kicked off the award season, which includes the GRAMMYs, BAFTAs and the Academy Awards. Many more iconic looks, moments and memes are yet to happen.
