The Kansas City Chiefs are now one of only seven NFL teams to win four Super Bowls. But how did they do it?
The First Win – Super Bowl IV
The first time the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl was back in 1970. That was a game that the Chiefs dominated winning the game 23-7. That game took place in New Orleans and was only the start of the Chiefs’ domination. The victory came in a win over the Minnesota Vikings.
The Chiefs dominated in the second quarter of this game with a massive 16-0 advantage and eventually winning 23-7. This victory marked a personal comeback for the star quarterback at the time Len Dawson. Dawson was also voted the most valuable player for this game, completing 71% of passes.
The Second Win – Super Bowl LIV 2020
During Superbowl LIV just like the most recent Super Bowl, the Chiefs took on the San Francisco 49ers at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Patrick Mahomes lead the Chiefs to three touchdowns to come from behind in a tense fourth quarter.
The Chiefs used a 21-point fourth quarter to earn this 31-20 victory. The 49ers controlled most of the game, with Mahomes and Travis Kelce being quick on the ball during the fourth quarter. This team from 2020 is not much different from the one that played in the 2024 Super Bowl because coach Andy Reid, Mahomes and Kelce are still there, as is Chris Jones. The win was the Chiefs’ first since 1970.
The Third Win – LVII 2023
The need to win followed the Chiefs into the 2023 Super Bowl at State Farm Stadium in Glendale Arizona. This was a ridiculously close game between the Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles as it finished 38-35. The winning field goal came from Harrison Butker. Mahomes picked up another Most Valuable Player award for completing 21 out of 27 passes, three touchdowns and a two-point conversion.
The Chiefs came into this Superbowl with a tenth consecutive winning record under head coach Andy Reid and their third Super Bowl in four years, but their fifth altogether. This was bittersweet as it was also the final Super Bowl for Norma Hunt, who died in June 2023, she was the widow of the Chiefs’ founder Lamar Hunt. Hunt was also a member and the only woman of the Never Miss a Super Bowl Club. The game was heavily referred to as Kelce Bowl as this marked the first Super Bowl to feature brothers playing against each other. Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and Eagles Center Jason Kelce.

The Chiefs managed their most recent win in Las Vegas during the most recent Super Bowl where they once again defeated the San Francisco 49ers. Just like their previous meeting in 2020, this game was very close finishing 22-25 to the Chiefs. Going in at half time the 49ers were in the lead and looked like they were going to take the win, but the Chiefs came back fighting in the third and fourth quarters to take the win.
As this was the Chiefs’ third win within five years, they have been established as a dynasty. This was also the second Super Bowl to be decided in overtime the first being Super Bowl LI seven years earlier. Just like in the previous years, Mahomes was named as the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player completing 34 of 46 passes, to touchdowns and one interception. This was the highest total audience with more than 200 million viewers watching, although some think the ‘Taylor Swift effect’ attributed to these figures. Super Bowl LVIII was the Chiefs’ sixth Super Bowl appearance and fourth in the past five seasons. Entering the game, the Chiefs had won three Super Bowls and lost two.
What is Next for the Chiefs?
The Chiefs now have a well-deserved spring break. The NFL season will start on the 5th September 2024. The Chiefs will be aiming to make it to another Super Bowl and make it back-to-back wins.
