In recent months, I’ve been seeing the return of some let’s say interesting fashion trends, particularly with the rise of platforms like TikTok. I’m certainly no fashionista myself but today I’ll be taking you through some trends that I just can’t get on board with.
Crocs.
When I saw influencers wearing Crocs, I genuinely thought it was a joke. The ‘What are thooooose’ vine was an integral part of my teenage years so a hatred of Crocs has been almost conditioned into me from then. I was also an avid Croc wearer as a child and I remember the blisters. Crocs were a staple of my childhood but I’m very keen for them not to become a staple of my 20s as well.
Double Denim.
Double denim isn’t a huge trend at the moment but it regularly seems to pop back into fashion and I’m never sure why. Its always been a decisive trend but it seems to manage to make its way back to popularity every few years. For me, I just find the whole ordeal too stressful. Wearing multiple shades of the same fabric that almost match but not quite is just too much for my slightly neurotic self.
Low Rise Jeans.
2000s fashion seems to be making a real comeback at the moment and honestly I’m rather indifferent to most of it. However, one trend I just really cannot get behind is low rise jeans, or low rise anything for that matter. As a curvier woman, high-waisted trousers are like a support blanket of mine and I find the idea of low-rise clothing terrifying. Also, in terms of practicality, I feel I’d be constantly in fear that they would fall down.
Animal print.
Now I’ll admit this is trend is a little hypocritical, I do actually own a couple of animal print items but its definitely something I usually steer clear of. I find the whole concept of animal print a little odd, for me it just looks like you’re wearing animal skin which I’m personally against. However, as I said I do own some animal print but just as a trend itself, I feel it is a little overdone. Sometimes it can look a little tacky and has sort of become a default pattern. Its not the worst trend but I think there are so many better patterns that are being overlooked in favour of animal print.
Schoolgirl fashion.
A consequence of me spending probably far too much time on TikTok is that schoolgirl fashion has been completely ruined for me. I used to quite like the style of check skirts but having been educated on the history of schoolgirl fashion, I can’t look at them the same. Twitter and TikTok have opened my eyes recently to the disturbing fetishization of schoolgirls, in fashion, as sexy halloween costumes and even in pornography. Plaid skirts (think Cher from Clueless) are sadly just one of many fashion trends being ruined and manipulated for the male gaze.
These are just some of the trends that I see rising to popularity at the moment that I just can’t get fully on board with. Some more oddly specific honourable mentions that I had to include would have to be: clear shoes that seem to become popular for celebrities every so often and micro handbags – what do you fit in them? Who knows, I can be a bit of a sheep sometimes so perhaps you’ll catch me following them soon enough. But for now at least they’re not really to my taste. I’d love to hear your opinions on these trends, and what are some trends you just can’t get behind?
