Towards the end of 2023, we saw the explosion of maximalist accessories. From the return of ‘balletcore’ – think satin slippers, headbands and ribbons – to gothic crucifixes, heavy embellishment and lace gloves.

More Is More In 2024

Running into 2024, the most poignant fashion advice is that more is more. Scrunchies – which we previously thought had seen their last ponytail – are reappearing in various textures.

Secondly, a wave of burgundy swept up Y2K streetwear influencers, resulting in one objective: incorporate as many red elements into an outfit as possible. Cherry-toned tights were layered with socks, leg warmers, and sandals.

“Hair, makeup, and jewellery took a back seat for once.”

Make sure to add some charms – just to be safe. Coco Chanel is supposed to have said, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory,” but this year, we’re adding five.

Trendsetters And Their Accessories

You didn’t exactly have to be a trend forecaster to see maximalism coming. With 2023 being the year of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, we’ve certainly had huge influences when it comes to accessories. Not to mention Rihanna’s iconic red Super Bowl half-time performance.

At The Golden Globes, it was somewhat refreshing that many celebrities didn’t accessorise to the nines. While there were a few exceptions – Billie Eilish in Willy Chavarria – most celebrities focused on simple extravagance. Clothing was the focus. Hair, makeup, and jewellery took a back seat for once.

“Brie Larson and Hunter Schafer also wore Prada, keeping the bags and jewels to a minimum.”

Award evenings are incredibly fashion-conscious occasions, as photographs notoriously stand the test of time. Outfits worn on the red carpet are immortalised in our collective minds forever, for better or worse. Remember Kim Kardashian’s floral Givenchy dress, which she wore to the 2013 Met Gala? It’s still being recreated a decade later. And nobody will ever forget Heidi Klum’s worm costume.

So, it’s better to avoid fleeting trends on the red carpet. The drama usually comes from elsewhere, particularly if Ricky Gervais is hosting.

What To Wear From The Golden Globes

This January, some of the best-dressed celebrities were those who kept it simple. Jennifer Aniston donned Dolce and Gabbana with a few simple rings and let the detail of the scalloped skirt do the talking. Her Rachel Green haircut making a return didn’t go unnoticed either.

Actress Ayo Edebiri paired her Prada dress with only a pair of earrings, a single ring, and matching fire-engine-red stilettos. The combined textures of satin and chiffon kept the look interesting. Brie Larson and Hunter Schafer also wore Prada, keeping the bags and jewels to a minimum.

“the ever-fashionable ‘less is more’ approach may be a positive beacon for others to follow.”

That’s not to say those who accessorised a little more didn’t look fantastic. Rosamund Pike made a dramatic statement in Dior, pairing a lace headdress with a matching couture gown. Tyler James and Chris Perfetti wore Dolce and Gabbana with added flower pins, adding interesting contrast to their pinstripe suits. The floral detail was a unique touch to men’s apparel.

Could Less Be More For Accessories?

The subtle approach to accessories felt like an antidote to the past year. Likely, we will see countless ties, sunglasses, hats, bracelets, and scarves discarded after their moment fades. Not only is this wasteful, but it’s also terrible for the environment.

But the ever-fashionable ‘less is more’ approach may be a positive beacon for others to follow.

In 2024, the most striking Golden Globes looks demonstrated the power of understated elegance. And, with a highly accessorised start to the year, the subtleties felt like a breath of fresh air.
