Lost in Space Review: Is A Happy Ending On The Cards?

Clare Sellers

It’s the story of a boy and his robot, cast out in space, battling aliens and trying to survive long enough to see the new world that’s waiting for them on Alpha Centauri. But with a new season comes new threats, and the question we’ve been asking since season one: will these space adventurers ever make it home?

Season 3 of ‘Lost in Space’ saw the Robinson family and their colony split up across space. The children, who fled the Resolute on a Jupiter ship and ended up having to do an emergency landing on an unknown planet, had been without their parents for a year when we caught up with them.

The introduction of a new character takes pride of place in this season’s plot, helping to tie together some loose strings from the first season, and adding an element of friction between certain characters as they find their footing in an interesting new dynamic.

“With bursts of colour and inspiring new planets and landscapes”

Intricate cinematography creates the atmosphere we have been longing for since the season two finale, with bursts of colour and inspiring new planets and landscapes, season three undoubtedly lives up to its predecessors from scenery to storyline.

In the beginning we are shown a divided Robinson family. Three siblings who have barely spoken for a year, and two parents that have struggled to keep it together since their children left them. This does give us an opportunity to delve into everyone’s individual struggles and developments, with Penny’s love life, Will’s inner turmoil, Judy’s secret mission and their parent’s unstable relationship taking centre stage.

Despite the period of separation, we do get to see those heartfelt family moments that we are so used to with this show. There is nothing the Robinson family wouldn’t do for each other. This season also gives us something we have been waiting for since the show began: the acceptance of Robot as a member of the Robinson family. And let’s face it, after everything he has done for the group, it’s the least that he deserves.

“Beautifully choreographed and starring some of the best acting ‘Lost in Space’ has seen so far”

Main character Will Robinson has definitely grown since his last appearance on ‘Lost in Space’, but with age comes maturity and the burdens of being the person every alien robot is after has taken a serious toll on his character. Fighting with the idea of sacrificing himself to protect those he loves, his character takes a sorrowful turn this season that will eventually prove he’s worthy of his place on Alpha Centauri.

After binging the entire season in the space of two days, I must give a special mention to the shocking plot point in episode six. The gut-wrenching scene left viewers stunned and anxious to find out what would happen to the fate of one of our favourite characters. Beautifully choreographed and starring some of the best acting ‘Lost in Space’ has seen so far, this scene had the audience glued to the screen.

The alien development that comes with this series finale was truly a spectacular sight, from learning about how they were created and programmed to forming bonds with the humans they once fought, the alien species challenges everything we have previously thought about them from start to finish.

With highs and lows, struggles and triumphs and the constant battle between success and failure, the final season of ‘Lost in Space’ is everything a finale should be.
