Pancake Day – also known as Shrove Tuesday – is a Christian feast day before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Though based in religion, the day is enjoyed by many people around the world, regardless of religion.
Personally, my favourite pancake topping has to be lemon and sugar, but cinnamon sugar is a close second. When it comes to crepes, they need to be filled with Nutella. Chocolate spread is a basic topping for every pancake and you can’t beat Nutella!
I don’t tend to love American style pancakes as much as thin pancakes but they’re great soaked in maple syrup and hazelnuts. I’m currently particularly keen on sweet potato American-style pancakes, a recipe you should definitely try!
Pancakes are supposed to be sweet and indulgent but, remember, there are no rules to the toppings. You can do sweet, savoury, salty or sour – whatever you fancy!
Weird but wonderful pancake toppings
Cookie dough pancakes – this is a type of pancake that you need to try at least once. Who doesn’t like cookie dough? If you’ve got a sweet tooth then this is the pancake for you. But, be warned- they do sound and look very heavy so don’t eat them too quickly or on a full stomach.
Fried chicken pancakes – it’s a great option for those that don’t like pancakes that are too sweet. They’re similar to fried chicken and waffles so if you like it, you’ll love the pancake version.
Blue cheese and pear pancakes – It doesn’t sound like it works but you can’t know unless you try. I know it sounds like a weird combination that isn’t completely appealing to everyone, but remember there’s cheese in cheesecake and we all love cheesecake.
Peanut butter and pickle pancakes – Peanut butter goes with chocolate but pickle? You’ll have to try this recipe to see if it really works. These are sweet but slightly sour pancakes. Pancake day only occurs once a year so why not try something different. You might not like it but it’ll surely be a memorable experience.
Pancake Wraps – Imagine your pancakes are actually tortillas and use them to make your wraps. In my wrap, I would have a veggie burger, mayonnaise and cheese so I can use the same food items for my pancake wrap.
Pizza Pancakes – This sounds like an ingenious idea! You can use jam instead of a tomato base and then use your regular sweet pancake toppings or pretend it’s an actual pizza and use your normal pizza toppings.
Tiramisu pancakes – Tiramisu is one of my favourite desserts, if you love it you need to try this recipe! You’ll need all the usual pancakes ingredients as well as, 80z mascarpone, 1 cup whipping cream, 1/4 cup of icing sugar, 2 tsp espresso powder and 1 tsp brandy. Whip these together and top your pancakes with your tiramisu-inspired cream.
Pancake day only comes once so please do have fun in the kitchen today. I hope that you’re inspired by some of the weird and wonderful recipes I found. And, if you want to try more than one, remember, you can still have pancakes any day of the week, I had pancakes on Sunday!
Celebrate this day with family and friends even if you’re not giving up anything for Lent, why not! Sometimes it’s better to give than give up, so give your time, energy and love, making some delicious pancakes.
Happy Pancake Day!
