Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Donald Glover are to star in a reboot of 2005 film Mr and Mrs Smith. This time the story will be told on Amazon as a series, and is set to be released next year.
It was announced on social media, after Glover recorded himself dancing, and Waller-Bridge posed against a door frame.
The pair are renowned for their success in both writing and acting, and will also be executive producers in the reboot. Waller-Bridge has notably written Killing Eve and Fleabag (which she also starred in), whilst Glover, alongside being a singer under the name Childish Gambino, has written and starred in Atlanta.
The original film starred Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Mr and Mrs Smith are both assassins. They have kept this a secret from each other for “five (or six) years” – a constant remark made throughout the original film. From having lied to each other for such a long time, their marriage is falling apart. Their relationship is then put to the test as they have both been given the job to kill each other.
What can we expect?
The action-packed 2005 film is known for its glossiness and sexiness, there is never a dull moment. It also has its subtly comedic moments, and with Waller-Bridge and Glover teaming up for the reboot, this factor certainly won’t be lost. After the release of Fleabag and Atlanta, the pair clearly know how to write and execute comedy effortlessly.
Besides this, Waller-Bridge is no stranger to the female assassin area after having written Killing Eve. Recently, the latest instalment of James Bond, No Time to Die, sees Waller-bridge as one of the lead writers. And with the heavy action associated with Mr and Mrs Smith, this will likely be flawless on her part.
It is also known that Glover has recently signed a multi-year contract with Amazon, suggesting the reboot will be one of many projects that he will work on.
One question remains though, Glover is American and Waller-Bridge is British, will they stick with their natural tongues or will they both inhabit the same accent?
