With a chorus that repeatedly implores “Will you forget it?”, Billie Eilish and Rosalía deliver a hauntingly ethereal song that makes sure it is anything but forgettable.

Billie Eilish and Rosalía’s long-awaited collaboration has dropped. It comes as part of the soundtrack of HBO’s hit series Euphoria. Together they deliver an emotionally-charged but minimalist mellow single characteristic of their discography. They first teased the song in 2019.

The glitz and drama of Euphoria

The mellow atmosphere does a great job conveying the wistful lyrics even in the music video. Here, elements of visual beauty (the 3D glass nails scream Euphoria with its glittery aesthetic!) do not necessarily render the words hollow. A prime example is the heavenly-like light beam backdrop. It is worked into the lyrics. The backdrop calls to the fragility of love which can both make one feel like a God (“one day I’m a God”) and bring sorrow. Eilish also pleads for liberation from a separation that feels like crucifixion (“give me a kiss and bring me down from the cross”). This melancholic tone is perfectly fitting for the teen drama show. The musical collaboration features on the teaser for “Part Two: Jules” and can be found here.

“Eilish described how she encouraged that the song remained in Spanish”

The collaboration is mostly sung in Spanish. In an interview with Apple Music, Eilish described how she wanted the song to be sung in Spanish; Rosalía’s native language. She also revealed the intermittent songwriting process over two years. The Grammy-winning artists worked lyrically hand in hand with their close collaborators, Eilish’s brother Finneas and Rosalía’s producer, El Guincho. It reflects the song; driven by emotion and authenticity. The vocals combine flawlessly and no singer outshines the other. Rosalía’s signature flamenco-inflected Latin R&B sound thrives alongside Eilish’s dark electropop melodies. It is the newest addition to their already-experimental music catalogues.

The Euphoria track is the singers’ first song release for 2021. “Lo Vas a Olvidar” nods to a year that appears very promising to the chart-topping musical sensations.

Billie Eilish and Rosalía’s ‘Lo Vas a Olvidar’ is out now via Darkroom/ Interscope Records.
