At the age of 52, Kylie Minogue released her 15th studio album DISCO on 6th November. Lead singles ‘Say Something’, ‘Magic’, and ‘I Love It’ confirmed Minogue didn’t come to play. This album is exactly what it says on the tin: pure, unadulterated disco.

After a slight detour into country music with her previous album Golden which she wrote on a two week trip to Nashville, Kylie is back doing exactly was she does best; producing bright, joyous, dancefloor-filling tracks that match her glitterball personality.

“That is exactly the experience DISCO offers: escapist disco with a modern, 2020 twist.”

In a recent interview promoting the record, Minogue revealed the album was born from the set-up of her Golden Tour, where audiences were invited to imagine they were watching as Donna Summer travelled across America from LA to “a gig at Studio 54”. Enjoying the Studio 54 element of the tour so much, Kylie decided that that is where she wished to stay. Being a child of the 70s, she just couldn’t shake the disco “in [her] system”.

And that is exactly the experience DISCO offers: escapist disco with a modern, 2020 twist. The album is packed from cover-to-cover with timeless, catchy hits which already slot comfortably into her extensive repertoire. My personal highlights include: ‘Real Groove’, ‘Supernova’, and ‘Where Does the DJ Go?’

As England continues its second national lockdown, Kylie has provided us with the perfect album for dancing on the kitchen tiles like nobody’s watching. We can all only hope to be dancing to it on a real dancefloor as soon as possible.
