Review: The Snuts – ‘Always’

The Snuts are a West Lothian-based band who have moved from strength to strength since the release of their first single in 2016. With just two EPs and a wide range of singles under their belt, the band have successfully made a name for themselves in the indie music scene, particularly in their hometown.

Their newest single, ‘Always’, comes after the release of their EP, Mixtape, which features some of their most popular material to date. ‘Coffee and Cigarettes’ shows their fast-paced energy, and ‘All Your Friends’ will act as a perfectly powerful opener for a live gig. ‘Always’ continues these addictive themes and adds the best guitar riff heard from the band thus far.

“Opening with an instantly memorable guitar riff, this single provides both a gorgeous sound and an incredible rhythm”

The beauty of ‘Always’ comes as a bit of a surprise after the release of their single a few months earlier called ‘Elephants’. This single was unlike any of the band’s previous releases and it was hard to find any sense of the original West Lothian band in it. Despite making it onto Radio 1 and gaining more mainstream attention, ‘Elephants’ did not demonstrate all the previous talents that the band had to offer. However, ‘Always’ successfully ticks all of the boxes.

Opening with an instantly memorable guitar riff, this single provides both a gorgeous sound and an incredible rhythm. ‘Always’ is impossible not to move to. As lead singer Jack Cochrane follows this guitar intro with his distinctive voice, there is nothing to criticise.

The whole single deserves your utmost attention but it is the lead up to the chorus that is the most memorable section. Drumbeats permeate Cochrane’s vocals as he sings “I’m breaking it out / Singing it louder, babe / I’m still falling for you / Still calling on you”.

If the groovy guitar riffs and energizing drum beats do not make you love this song, these lyrics certainly will. Cochrane utilises his voice to the best of his abilities to sing sweetly and lovingly about his “bright-eyed girl”, making it impossible to not feel the love.

‘Always’ is the grooviest, most addictive love song you’ll hear all year. Send it to your partners, to your friends, and revel in its energizing and addictive tune. This single signals an exciting year ahead for The Snuts as we can hope they deliver more tunes as flawless as ‘Always’.

‘Always’ is out now and released by Parlophone Records.
