Honeymoan ‘Show You Off’ review.

Honeymoan is back on track with a new powerful single, ‘Show You Off’.

The Cape Town-born, London-based, alt-pop band formed in 2017 as a ‘just for fun’ project. However, the group has since garnered international acclaim for its infectious sound that delves into contemporary pop, funk, and psychedelia, with nods to shoegaze, psych-rock, and R&B. With a wide range of influences including Drake, Alvvays, 100 Gecs, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Tame Impala, they’ve created fresh, exciting, and super relatable tracks.

THE BAND’S GROWTH

Honeymoan comprises Alison Rachel (vocals), Skye MacInnes (guitar), and Joshua Berry (bass and production). As a result of the pandemic and an increasingly competitive environment, the three-piece have worked extremely hard to get the recognition they deserve.

MacInnes recalls in an interview with Connect Everything Collective: “In the beginning, we kind of had a shoe-gazey, sort of indie sound, which we were initially going to carry on. But I think when Josh joined, his very specific production style introduced this interesting avenue for us.

“I think that’s definitely influenced how our sound has developed, and there has been a lot more electronic influence over the years, but I don’t think that’s necessarily intentional, in a way that’s just happened as we’ve been able to work with more tools.”

THE SINGLE

“It’s about the inner conflict of being attracted to someone who isn’t your usual type”

Speaking about their latest effort, Rachel explains: “‘Show You Off’ is about having a secret affair with someone you’re a little ashamed of. It’s about the inner conflict of being attracted to someone who isn’t your usual type.”

Accompanied by cheeky lyrics, lusty vocals, and slick production from Berry, the song explores themes of self-confidence, romance, and disclosure.

Rachel’s ability to sing about forbidden love as if it’s the most beautiful and fascinating feeling in the world makes the listener want to experience a story like the one she tells. With jagged guitar melodies and a seemingly repetitive but super catchy chorus, the song has a contagiously cheeky naturalness to it.
“Alison feels suspended and torn, as if in an eternal battle between her heart and her head”
Alison feels suspended and torn, as if in an eternal battle between her heart and her head. As per the song lyrics, she tries to figure out what is the right thing to do and how she should really behave towards her lover and her friends. Her reputation is important, but she can’t help herself: “List of guilty pleasures I can add you to […]”, she sings.
That is the secret of many other Honeymoan songs. Immediate, unfiltered, and beyond your taste or expectations, their music always wins you over.

WHAT’S UP NEXT?

The song is a follow-up to ‘We’re On An Island, But It’s The UK’. Nine songs that make up Honeymoan’s debut album Sorry Like You Mean It, which is due for release on 29th September.

Honeymoan will be taking their album on tour around the UK and Europe. If you like their mix of 80s sounds, punchy beats, and experimental sounds, you can catch them playing The Lexington in London on 18th October.
