The complete casting for the upcoming Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street has been revealed.
Directed by Tony award-winner Thomas Kail and featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, the musical is set to make its debut at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on February 26, 2023.
This dark musical satire tells the story of Benjamin Barker who, under the alias of Sweeney Todd, returns to London to seek revenge on Judge Turpin, who wrongfully convicted and exiled him in order to take his wife. After forming an unlikely partnership with Mrs Lovett, he sets up a barber shop where he slaughters each of his customers, turning them into meat pies for Lovett’s pie shop just a floor below.
Tony and Grammy-nominated recording artist Josh Groban will star in the titular role. He first rose to fame in 1998 when he was asked to stand in for Andrea Bocelli to rehearse a duet with Celine Dion in preparation for the Grammy Awards. Impressed by his vocal talents, Rosie O’Donnell subsequently invited him on to her show which saw his singing career take off. Some of Groban’s best-known songs include “You Raise Me Up,” “To Where You Are,” “Brave,” and “Now or Never.”
He will be joined on stage by Tony award-winners Annaleigh Ashford and Ruthie Ann Miles, who will play Mrs Lovett and Beggar Woman respectively.
The cast also features Jordan Fisher as Anthony, Gaten Matarazzo as Tobias, Maria Bilbao as Johanna, Jamie Jackson as Judge Turpin, John Rapson as Beadle Bamford, Nicholas Christopher as Pirelli/standby for Sweeney Todd, and Jeanna de Waal as standby for Mrs. Lovett and Beggar Woman.
There will be set design by Mimi Lien, costume design by Emilio Sosa, lighting design by Natasha Katz and sound design by Nevin Steinberg.
