Third Covid Vaccine Approved For Use In The UK

Today, a third Covid-19 vaccine has been approved for use in the UK by EU regulators.

Made by Moderna, this is a mRNA vaccine that uses a small part of the virus’ genetic code to programme the body to fight and immunize itself.

This new vaccine is similar to the Pfizer vaccine already in circulation.

However, unlike the Pfizer vaccine that requires storage temperatures close to -75C, the Moderna vaccine requires temperatures of around -20C, making it easier to transport.

In trials of more than 30,000 patients, the Moderna vaccine offered 94% efficacy and is set to roll out to those remaining later in the year.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said, “This is further great news and another weapon in our arsenal to tame this awful disease.”

The UK originally ordered 7 million doses but has since upped this to 17 million as Covid-19 cases continue to rise.

Vaccine deployment minister, Nadhim Zahawi, said, “The NHS is pulling out all the stops to vaccinate those most at risk as quickly as possible, with over 1,000 vaccination sites live across the UK by the end of the week to provide easy access to everyone, regardless of where they live.”

This vaccine, however, is not expected to be available until the spring and all patients will have to have a second booster shot.

“The Moderna vaccine will be a vital boost to these efforts and will help us return to normal faster.”

Government and health officials are continuing to remind everyone that no vaccine is 100% effective and that measures must still be put in place to ensure the safety of all citizens.
