TikTok Food Trends

Over the last year we have all found ourselves scrolling through TikTok.

With eating being one of the few things we could do in lockdown, combined with our inability to go to restaurants for meals, we have been left looking for new recipes. TikTok has catered for everyone, with either easy student recipes, cheap recipes or even restaurant recipes. This has helped many people, like myself, find some of their new favourite meals.

Pasta

I find that pasta is one of the most common food trends on TikTok, or any social media platform for that point. However, this may just be because it is one of my favourite and easiest meals and therefore fills my for you page. But, I think we are a nation of pasta lovers and it is one of the simplest and easiest foods to cook. Many pasta recipes have been shared across TikTok such as the Gigi Hadid vodka pasta sauce and the recent feta and tomato pasta recipe. Celebrity chefs share their tips, restaurants provide us with their techniques, people share their favourite pasta recipes and we try them. Pasta is an essential in every household and TikTok has helped us make it even better.

Iced Coffee

Although it isn’t necessarily food, iced coffee recipes have become one of the most common and have become a rather large trend all over the world. In the first lockdown iced coffee recipes were a trend that everyone was hopping onto, with cafes closed people had to find alternative ways to get that takeaway coffee. But, I have noticed that while iced coffee is still one of the biggest TikTok trends – it just isn’t necessarily one that you can make at home. Baristas and customers are now sharing both their favourite take out orders. Starbucks’ Kinder Bueno drink is one that has become a trend and something lots of people are wanting to try.

Nachos

Nachos is a meal that is fun, easy and most people like. Recently, we have seen people creating large portions of nachos. This is done by putting tinfoil on the table and then laying out the nachos, meat and dip. This became a popular trend that many people did during the third lockdown, particularly for those with housemates as it gave them something to do. However, this is still something I see across TikTok now as it has become an ongoing trend.

Picnic

Picnic food has become a common trend; this may be because we couldn’t really do much when things weren’t open except go out to eat outside in fields or on the beach with our friends. Therefore, people have shared TikToks of their picnics and the food they included. One of the popular trends that people started doing, not only at picnics but also at parties, was eating cake by slicing it and eating it out of a wine glass.

Baked Oats

Some people saw lockdown as an opportunity to eat healthier or to find other meal alternatives. One of the trends that I saw across TikTok and social media was baked oats. As people started to make baked oats we were introduced to many different flavours that people had created and ones that others recommended. This is a trend that I still see now not only on TikTok but other social media platforms.

Little Moons

We can’t talk about food trends without talking about Little Moons. People emptied them from the supermarkets and used their daily walks to go on a hunt for them in the third lockdown. These became a popular TikTok trend and something that everyone wanted to get their hands on so they could try them. People were posting videos of their taste testing across TikTok with reviews of their texture and flavour with mixed opinions of what people thought.

Chefs

A food trend that has become popular, not for its recipes but for the comedy factor, is sending Gordon Ramsay a video of your food. This is either you making your meal or the finished result, and he duets it with his opinion. On Twitter, this is something that people have found entertaining for years. Recently it moved over to TikTok. The chefs also provide users with recipes and tips for trending recipes.
