Top Ten Games to Play on Christmas Day

Jess Blake

In no particular order, the team at Empoword Journalism have rounded up the best games to play this Christmas! Some tailored for days in with the family, and others where a bit more festive drinking can be involved. However you’re spending the day, these games will certainly keep you in festive cheer with fun all round.

Board Games

Don’t Get Got: Secret Missions Christmas Game

This one brings a little sneakiness to Christmas, with each player having to complete three tasks to take the win. These can range from convincing a player to swap seats with you to getting another player to take a sip of your drink. Sure to add some extra fun and laughter this Christmas Day, even if you get paranoid of your fellow players’ actions.

Articulate

A Christmas classic! Bring everyone together with this fast-talking description board game. The aim of the game is for players to try to describe as many card entries as possible within 30 seconds. This game is great for families and friends all year round, but everything is more fun at Christmas, right?

5 Second Rule

Another fast-talking game with quick thinking too. Time is not on your side with this fast-paced game where you have to just say it out loud, be it three things beginning with B, three breeds of dogs, or three things that make you scream. Things are sure to get interesting, but it’s all in good fun! This is definitely a cracking game for Christmas when it comes to thinking under pressure.

Trivial Pursuit

The ultimate quiz game! Whether you play parents vs children or boys vs girls, you’ll never fail to have some fun. There are plenty of questions, meaning its rare that anything gets repeated, and the diversity of questions is great, but not so massively difficult that it’s inaccessible.

Cards Against Humanity

Not quite your family game but alternatives can be purchased that are family friendly. Now, this can be a whole lot of fun, though not entirely politically correct; the box does state that it’s made for horrible people. This game can take a tipsy turn if you play in the way that whoever wins the black card each round can choose someone to take a drink.

Monopoly

A classic board game! Take note that it can potentially take hours to complete. Only the persistent make it to the end, nonetheless it is a thoroughly enjoyable game. Move around the board buying and dealing in properties, building houses and hotels as you go. Monopoly is the fast-dealing property trading game. You’ll buy, sell, and have a blast.

Parlour Games

And now, some games that are easily played with household items, such as playing cards, post-its, or sticky labels. No boards required!

Charades

This one can easily be played by folding up pieces of paper and putting them in a bowl for people to choose from.  Everyone knows the classic game, so I don’t need to explain it. But watching your family act out random film titles or books can be really entertaining.

The Forehead Game

This is another Christmas cracker! This can easily be played with sticky labels placed on all the player’s foreheads with a famous name written on it. Watching everyone guess their own names is fun and filled with laughter.

Tip: For an extra laugh or two, you could always write the name of someone also playing in the room.

Christmas Quiz

Nothing beats a quiz at Christmas, and you can tailor this how you like. You can create your own or find free ones online. You could have a themed Christmas quiz or a general trivia one – the possibilities are endless but be careful, the competition can get intense!

Uno/Jack Change It

One is a card game itself, and the other is the exact same game but with your standard deck of playing cards (check out Card Game Wiki for a full rundown of the rules. Then, to make it a little more boozy each time a trick card is played, the person that the trick card is played on must drink. Be careful when it comes to picking up cards, as the person who picks it up must also drink. So let’s hope you don’t end up picking up two or more cards, eh?

And there you have it, a few games to inspire your Christmas fun. Hopefully this list can fill you with festive cheer and bring fun and laughter over your holidays!
