A seasonal change is an awkward time for our wardrobes as we transition between summer dresses and sweater weather. It’s not quite cold enough for a coat but a t-shirt would leave you a bit chilly. You just aren’t ready to tidy away the sandals and vest tops yet, though your thigh highs and sweater vests are calling to be let out.

The Instagram fashion community has been taking the opportunity to show off their transitional season outfits and everyday looks for the summer to autumn period. There is a huge range of aesthetics to take inspiration from and use in your own style to create interesting and seasonal outfits. While you’re at it take pieces you already own and wear them in new ways to avoid over-buying and under-wearing.

Don’t put the summer dress away yet

Can’t bear packing away your cute summer dresses yet? Then don’t. Creator @rayrayfits showcases how you can style your summer dress with knee-high boots to achieve that mid-season look. Why not add some funky tights and a light neutral blazer to complete the look?

Nothing screams summer more than bright colours and @mel.amartinez styles the perfect look for autumn weather with a summer touch. Full-length trousers and a sweater provide warmth but the vibrant pinks, oranges and yellows are reminiscent of a summer fiesta and don’t fail to keep the sunny season alive.

Long sleeves and cute booties

Boots are a must-have in any autumn wardrobe whether ankle, knee or thigh length. If you’re not ready to break out the long boots why not style an outfit with a cute ankle boot like @beccaworewhat. Styled with fun patterned tights and a long-sleeved high-neck top layered under a flowy white dress, this look has a funky silhouette to add some spice to your transitional outfit.

Cardie weather

Autumn is the season where the cardigan reigns supreme and @8mlyn3 knows how to make a cardigan the centre of an outfit. Wear your favourite cardie as a top instead of a jacket and make it a statement by only half buttoning it. Paired with some groovy flares, platform sandals and chunky jewellery who says cardigans are just for grannies?

Texture is everything when it comes to style and mixing ‘seasonal’ fabrics can help you transition between the warmer and cooler months. Creator @eevazeegers produces a stunning combination using a fluffy white quarter-zip fleece, baguette bag and shimmery baby pink flares. The whole look is pulled together by white Dr Marten boots to give it that edge.

Tailored for the season

Fans of tailored suits and blazers will be more than ready for the colder weather to move in so they can unleash their tailored pieces. When it’s still too warm for a full-blown coat, why not try a two-piece suit as @pineapplejessiex does in this killer outfit. Creepers, chain accessories, leather and round sunglasses make this look stand out from the crowd while remaining a classic option for every occasion.

Socks and Sandals

Some may call socks and sandals a fashion crime but if you style them right, you can create a look that turns heads. This look by @shokotatara uses colour and shape to create a transitional outfit. The shades of autumnal browns among the layers and pops of bright green details are the ultimate combination of subtle and brave.

Scared of turning away from the colours of summer? Start to slowly introduce the shades of autumn into your wardrobe like @style_for_daysss. Warm orange in satin or suede styled beside a simple pattern like gingham makes for a casual yet seasonal outfit. Instead of boots, trainers can be worn to keep comfortable and cool.

Layers, layers, layers

Layers make the world go round and creator @stylebyalishak knows how to style a layered fit for the transitional season. Don’t be afraid to put a neutral pair of trousers or a maxi skirt under your go-to mini skirt to keep your legs toasty. A waistcoat is a perfect way to add an extra layer to your outfit, without taking away from your vibe. Layers let you switch up your image during the day and depending on temperature and weather needs.

Casual sweaters

A sweater isn’t just for Christmas. Use your jumpers throughout the Autumn months to bring the warmth. Or why not crop them with a bralette and style them with a light flowy skirt or cargo trousers like @theconcious_closet to bridge the seasonal gap. Using items you already own to work for multiple seasons is also a brilliant way to cut down on unused clothing.
