Everyone can agree that TV has been the perfect escape during Lockdown; especially with Netflix, Amazon Prime and BritBox there is an endless supply of great TV.
We’ve picked some of our favourite shows to share with you. There’s a huge variety of shows so hopefully, there’s something you can add to your watch later list!
Gilmore Girls has proven to be very popular with our contributors (not really surprising when the main character is an aspiring journalist!)
Lucy Martin – I’ve found myself re-watching TV shows that I loved a few years ago as a sort of comfort in the face of uncertainty right now. Gilmore Girls has been really good for my mental health in particular. It’s heart-warming and cheerful as well as a welcome break from everything going on. Tweet to @lucymjourno
Holly HD – I’ve really enjoyed Gilmore Girls! I’ve only just started it because I now have the time to watch it properly! I also started Benidorm right at the beginning of lockdown for something light-hearted and easy to follow! Tweet to @Hollyhd2002
Ffion Clarke – I’ve also started re-watching Gilmore girls! It’s the most wholesome show and I’m pretty sure Rory initially inspired me to go into journalism. Their mother-daughter relationship is also really nice to see now that I’m away from my family. Plus it’s just nice watching something you know from another, normal time – really helps with the escapism. Tweet to @FfionJourno
Jess WaImsley – I love Gilmore Girls. It’s a show that reminds you of home whilst making you laugh out loud – bare in mind it’s best watched with a cup of coffee and pop tarts! Tweet to @jess_walmsley11
Bingeable and lighthearted TV shows are firm favourites.
Orla McAndrew – The first show I watched in lockdown was Schitts Creek. I love it! It’s about a family who lost all their money and has to move to the run-down town of Schitts Creek. The character development in this show is what makes it so perfect and heartwarming! I’ve also been watching She-Ra and the Princesses of Power- pure magic and escapism. Watching the princesses come together to try and save the world has given me so much hope! Tweet to @OrlaMMcAndrew2

Nevie G-F – TV shows I’ve loved during lockdown have been things like The Split, something you can binge. However, something more to lift my mood has been things like I’ll Get This on BBC and classic shows like Miranda and Gavin and Stacey. Tweet to @Neve_GF
Lauren McGaun – I have been religiously binge-watching W1A during lockdown. Not only has this hilarious sitcom helped me through some hard times during lockdown but it’s also inspired me to pursue a career in journalism as its realism replicates working at the BBC so well. Tweet to @lauren_mcgaun
Madeline Raine – I’ve been binge-watching How I Met Your Mother. It is so hilariously funny and uplifting yet still deals with important struggles we all face in our day to day lives. Tweet to @RaineMadeleine
Paloma Pryia – I have been watching The Ghost Whisperer. It’s about a lady called Melinda Gordon who is able to see and speak to ghosts. Each episode she’s helping people through the grieving process. Honestly, it’s sort of like exploring what a “normal” life is. I’d recommend this show to anyone interested in life after death and the emotions we take with us into death – obviously it’s fiction, but emotions are definitely explored in depth.
Amy Murray – I have been rewatching ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and ‘Community’, two of my all-time favourite shows. Both deal with serious issues in creative ways, supernatural reinterpretations through comedy. They’re beautifully detailed and well made, and I find them quite comforting in the way they reassure the listener that it is okay to struggle. I also found that revisiting shows that I had already watched brought some familiarity to an otherwise unfamiliar new situation.

Laura Buckle – Without a doubt, the latest season of Rupaul’s Drag Race has kept my spirits high during the lockdown. If you ever need to escape the present dullness of reality, then a hilarious episode with Mama Ru and the season 12 queens are guaranteed to ‘werk’. The semi-final episode was even filmed via Zoom call, showing that tv can still stay fabulous in quarantine.
Cerys Turner – Suits is my life right now! Getting insight into how lawyers operate is really interesting, plus the characters are really well-developed and the soundtrack is stellar. Tweet to @cerysturner7
However some people have found it harder to watch TV during lockdown
Lucy Williamson – To offer a different opinion: I’ve actually found that I’ve watched a lot less tv/Netflix in lockdown – which I have quite enjoyed. Like I haven’t watched a full series at all. Maybe because I would usually watch Netflix as a way to de-stress from a busy day – but because I’m not busy it doesn’t have the same appeal maybe. I’ve found a lot more comfort from podcasts recently! Or writing. Tweet to @lucycwilliamson
