With lockdown restrictions set to ease completely before summer in England, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the new outfit possibilities. Don’t worry, we’ve got a rundown on the trends for post-lockdown 2021.
Tracksuits
Now I don’t know about the rest of you but working from home has led to my abandonment of formal workwear. Occasionally I’ll throw on a cardigan for meetings but I’ve found myself living in loungewear sets. Whether it’s shorts and crop tops or oversized sweatpants and sweatshirts, or a combo thereof (big-pants little-shirt I see you), this trend will shape the way we dress for a while yet.
Corsets
If you’ve been anywhere on the internet during Covid-19, you’ve probably heard of cottage-core. Although patterned dresses and basket bags are on their way out, the dainty lace-up corset has broadened its horizons. And you don’t need to become an expert in lace-up to wear it: one-piece corsets with zips or buttons are all over the runway and high street. Wear either alone or with a contrasting oversized shirt. Corset shapes built into tops and jumpers have also begun to make an appearance.
Mini skirts
The S/S 21 runways also saw a resurgence in the barely-there miniskirt. While runway it can be paired with smaller tops for a hip reveal, it also works fantastically with a basic white t-shirt and an oversized blazer for an off duty look. Alternatively, add a cardigan, a mini bag, and mid-shin socks for a more preppy style.
Low-rise jeans
Speaking of low-rise, this next one might be slightly controversial for those of us who lived through the mid-2000s: yes, the ever-controversial low-rise jeans are back. Especially when flared and paired with tiny tops, think Paris Hilton. It’s certainly not for everyone (me).
Loose-fit jeans
Fortunately for those of us stuck in denial, loose-fit wide-leg jeans are also making a serious comeback. Expect to see lots of pockets, patchwork, and references to tech-wear. This style can also be translated to simple loose straight leg jeans which, in neutral washes, can be perfect for a date-night or casual Friday. Between these and low-rise pairs, the age of the skinny jeans’ classic silhouette is coming to an end.
Colours
The colour palette for 2021 is looking to be bright and bold, think Pantone’s Illuminating – a bright but wearable yellow. Clothes in this, and other nature evoking colours of bright greens and blues, are likely to be popular choices. Crisp black and white shades are also set to stay – making a great backdrop to more daring hues.
A combination of dressed up and casual will embody post-Covid-19 fashion. Rediscovering the joys of dressing up for events beyond your weekly Tesco trip is likely to coincide with the vaccination roll-out but expect this in combination with oversized pieces and continued layering. Also, bedazzling should make a comeback, just saying.
